How do I run qemu on the CSIL machines?

In order to run a virtual machine using qemu, you will need to use your sandbox directory.

Log on to a CSIL machine and cd into your sandbox directory. Create an hard disk image using the following command:

qemu-img create fedora.img 8G

Make sure you have a local iso file with an operating system on it. You may download one in this way:

wget ftp://ftp.ucsb.edu/pub/mirrors/linux/fedora/fedora/linux/releases/20/Fedora/i386/iso/Fedora-20-i386-DVD.iso

To boot from the iso in qemu issue a command such as:

qemu-kvm -localtime -net user -net nic -m 256 -cdrom Fedora-20-i386-DVD.iso -hda fedora.img -boot d

After the installation has finished, you can boot your virtual machine with a command similar to:

qemu-kvm -localtime -net user -net nic -m 1024 -hda fedora.img -boot d
