Three Engineering faculty receive the AAAS Fellowship award.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has awarded the distinction of Fellow to 503 of its members this year. These individuals have been elevated to this rank because of their efforts toward advancing science applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished.
University of California Santa Barbara is proud to announce that three of our Engineering faculty members have been chosen to receive the AAAS fellowship award. On Saturday, February 19th, an official certificate and a gold and blue rosette pin (representing science and engineering, respectively) will be given to Francis J. Doyle III, Arthur C. Gossard and Chris G. Van de Walle at the AAAS Fellows Forum during the 2011 AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.
Francis J. Doyle III is a professor at UCSB in the Chemical Engineering Department. Professor Doyle is also a part of the Biomolecular Science and Engineering Department. He will be receiving his award for his distinguished contributions to the field of systems biology, particularly for the use of control principles in the analysis of biological networks.
Arthur C. Gossard is a professor of the Materials Department and the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department at UCSB. Professor Gossard is receiving his award for pioneering the growth of 2-D semiconductor quantum well materials that enabled the first observation of the fractional quantum Hall effect.
Chris G. Van de Walle is a professor of the Materials Department at UCSB since 2004. Professor Van de Walle has been chosen to receive the AAAS fellowship award for his pioneering research on the theory of semiconductor interfaces and defects in solids, and for leadership in computational physics and materials science.
