New Chairs named for Materials, Computer Science
New Chairs have been appointed in UC Santa Barbara's Materials Department and Department of Computer Science.
Tresa Pollock, who joined the UCSB faculty in 2010 and is the Alcoa Professor of Materials, will be the next Chair of the Materials Department, replacing Jim Speck. Pollock's work focuses on materials and structures for advanced energy and transportation technologies. She is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow and past president of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society, and a fellow of ASM International. Pollock led a major National Academy study on Integrated Computational Materials Engineering, and serves on the Advisory Committee for the Engineering Directorate of the National Science Foundation. She received her Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Subhash Suri has been appointed the next Chair of the Department of Computer Science, replacing Amr El Abbadi. Suri's research interests are in algorithms, wireless sensor networks, data streams, computational geometry and game theory. He is a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and an ACM Distinguished Scientist, and a fellow of IEEE. Suri received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University.
